Genre-Fluid of Genre-Bending

People who follow me know I often make up new words if I don’t believe a word exists for something I’m trying to explain or share with others. Thus my word to describe pretty much every book I’ve ever written is romash. Well, imagine my disappointment to learn that I did not makeup either Genre-Fluid or Genre-Bending. Obviously, I’m not as clever as I thought I was!

Our Triple A podcast is featuring an author who, like me, combines a few sub-genres. We were trying to think of a topic that might encapsulate our discussion during our podcast. After reading her novella, I suggested Fantasy, but that didn’t exactly ring true for her because while it has an element of Fantasy with a Greek mythology component, there is also a huge mystery embedded in the story.

When I did research on Genre-Fluid, I found a music group with that name. I even found a definition in the urban dictionary: “Adjective: appreciating several different genres. Most commonly applied to music, but can also refer to films, games or any other media.” Pretty sure other media would encompass books!. Genre-bending is defined in Wiktionary as a noun: “The subversion of tropes associated with a particular artistic genre or the synthesis of multiple genres.” I re-checked my made-up word, Romash, and no such definition exists in either Wiktionary or the Urban Dictionary…whew…I’d like to know that my odd quirky made-up words are truly mine and mine alone.

Regardless, I like the idea of combining several different sub-genres into one and not just romance plus something else. I can’t wait to go on the magical mystery tour with KB Belmar, and maybe that will inspire me to do the same. Why the hell not ? Who says you can’t combine Sci-Fi with a Cozy Mystery!
