To say that I’ve been obsessed with what happens to women’s libidos and bodies as they age would be an understatement. I’d like to think these blogs are educational and relevant to many of us, so I continue to push on when I find articles of interest that address these issues. The latest is a little-known pharmaceutical known as the pink pill. I had no idea this existed because, surprise, surprise, the medical community rarely gives a shit about women and their sexual health. So what is the pink pill? In a vaginashell (never a nutshell…how sexist), the pink pill is a pill that increases women’s sexual pleasure. I came across an article that talked about a documentary on this particular topic, and here is what I learned:

- The fight to bring this pill to market took an entire decade…because duh, it wasn’t for men. Addyi, the pink pill for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women, was approved on August 18th, 2015, nearly twenty years after Viagra, which was approved by the FDA on March 27, 1998, and put on the market that same year.
- The reason there was a ten-year fight and the delay over approval for Addyi included concerns that women would “not make good choices.” Can you f$%king believe that? Because, of course, we aren’t supposed to have sexual desire as we age.
- Addyi is a non-hormonal prescription medication that’s been mistakenly called “female Viagra.” But unlike that little blue pill, Addyi works in the brain, not the body. The difference is that instead of taking it before sexual activity, it’s meant to be taken daily to increase sexual desire, mainly in perimenopausal and menopausal women.
- Addyi was rejected by the Food and Drug Administration twice. Then the assholes put a black box warning on the label, which cautioned women that there was a risk of severe hypotension and fainting, particularly when taken with certain medications or alcohol. Fortunately, that was changed in 2019 to instead warn patients to wait at least two hours to take Addyi if they had consumed alcohol.

Here’s the rub for me…I see ads for Viagra and other drugs on TV all the time, but I have never seen one for Addyi. I wonder how many readers have ever heard of Addyi, or, like me, is this the first you’ve learned of this magic pill? This will definitely have to be something I weave into a future book!
