So…I just read in an online Cosmopolitan article that gooning was named the fetish of the year by Clips4Sale. If you don’t know what gooning is, don’t worry, neither did I! But you’re about to learn all about it because I’m going to share what I found in my research. So let me tell you what gooning is…no pussyfooting around…pun sort of intended. Gooning is prolonged masturbation, often combined with viewing pornography, leading to a sort of blissful state of mind known as “gooned out.” Now, some of you may say, “Oh, you mean edging.” But, no, glooning is like edging, but takes it so much further because it often does not end in orgasm, unlike edging. The goal is not a more powerful orgasm, but rather that hypnotic state. Wait…there’s more…

- Gooning first appeared in the Urban Dictionary in 2005, but gained enough popularity to start showing up in kink-focused communities in the 2010s.
- The increase in interest really started taking off during COVID because of the nature of gooning, which is mainly a solo experience. Folks who were regular porn watchers had a whole lot of alone time on their hands.
- There are more than 300,000 gooning related searches on Google every month. Guess I added a few this month!
- A ZipHealth survey of 1,000 participants found that one in four adults has tried gooning. It’s more common with men because twice as many men as women have tried gooning. Seems it is most popular with Millennials and Gen-Z.
- Gooning is not without concerns or dangers. That same survey by ZipHealth found that 1 in 7 people reported requiring extreme or niche porn to stay aroused or engaged. Additionally, participants reported feeling desensitized during regular sexual encounters, and 7% said they feel increasingly disconnected from their partners. Finally, some reported extreme levels of soreness and fatigue due to excessive masturbation. Four percent also stated that gooning interfered with their daily responsibilities.
- Medical professionals have weighed in on this kink, noting that excessive gooning can lead to erectile dysfunction or changes in sexual satisfaction. There is also a concern that gooning may also lead to a dependence on porn, creating a compulsion that is easily categorized as porn addiction.
- On the plus side, much like masturbation, people who engage in gooning believe they gain a better understanding of their bodies and that the meditative, transcendent state is a huge benefit. The jury is still out on the health benefits of gooning, especially if people take it too far and it becomes an addiction.

So…there you have it! Personally, gooning would probably frustrate the hell out of me way before I reached that meditative state! But for those of you who are fascinated by this, go for it, give it a try! My guess is that it might be a piece of cake for those women in menopause who already have a tough time with orgasms after their bodies have changed. Will gooning show up in a new book, doubtful, but plenty of interesting things do make it into my books, so take a chance and click on the links below.
