Well, hallelujah…for once I get to blog about something that improves with age, versus telling y’all about our intimate bits falling apart as we age! Also, I’m right back at talking about sex after my mini diversion into politics. Sure, there is a ton to address about what is happening in our country, but I try very hard to provide pleasant distractions. Goddess knows, we need them. Not to ignore what is happening because we should not be doing that. But to allow ourselves mini vacations from the depressing news. Anyhoo, back to today’s topic. I recently read an article titled “The Best Sex of Your Life is Still to Come.” Well, that certainly caught my attention.

Apparently, the old myth of peaking in your 20s for men, and I think maybe 30s or early 40s for women, is wrong! It seems counterintuitive that we aren’t having the best sex of our lives when we have the stamina, flexibility, and right level of hormones. However, according to the article, we aren’t! New research from HIMS reveals that sexual satisfaction peaks at age 55 for women and, even more astounding, age 56 for men. Not that I particularly care about men’s sexual peak. The reason for this makes more sense when you think about it. With age comes experience, confidence, deeper emotional connection, and a comfort level with self, especially for women. Survey respondents reported greater confidence in their bodies and greater self-awareness. I guess the age-old adage (pun intended) “practice makes perfect” is true. Surprisingly, the research found that the lowest age of sexual satisfaction was 27. The survey didn’t ignore the challenges related to sex and ageing, such as respondents reporting issues with erectile dysfunction (9%), low libido (15%), and vaginal dryness (12%), which did have an impact on their sex lives. Intimacy is far more than penetration and orgasm. Quality over quantity wins out every time.
While most of my books have an age range of the late 20s to early 40s, I have a few books with predominant characters in their 50s and 60s, such as Georgetown Glen and The Next Generation spin-off series. I’m certainly glad that I portrayed those characters as still interested in intimacy and sex. I guess I got that correct. There are authors who write books about more mature women, and I am happy to read the intimacy scenes that don’t shy away from adding a bit of spice. Feel free to check out my books or two Affinity authors that excel at writing mature women: Glenda Poulter or Jen Silver.
