Well…the USA finally woke from its deep sleep. Tuesday wasn’t just a blue wave; it was a raging tsunami against hate, corruption, and the Trump Administration. I’m not sure what finally did it. The pundits will be arguing about it for months. Maybe it was the ICE Gestapo and their cruel ways, or the price of gas that affected so many people with Trump’s shitty policies; people finally disgusted by the billionaires taking everything and leaving everyone else behind. Who knows? I hate that we only woke up because the cruelty personally affected more people than it could be ignored, rather than an overwhelming response to cruelty to others. Anyway…I’ve decided to research a few statistics about this historic moment to share with y’all.

- Texas turned blue and has not had a Democratic elected senator since 1988. Nor has it had a Democratic elected governor since the 90s, when Ann Richards won in 1990.
- The last time Mississippi elected a Democratic senator was in 1982, when John Stennis was re-elected. He had served since 1947.
- Here are the firsts, which fare very well for women: First Native American (First Nations) woman for governor and also first US Senator; first black woman for governor; first Muslim senator (not a woman, but still historic); first openly gay male senator; first Latino woman for governor in Texas; while not half, this year we elected a historic number of women for governor, making it come January, 19 women holding the highest office in a state. All of these historic wins are Democrats.
- While this election did not surpass the election in 1936 when Democrats won 335 seats in the US House and 76 in the US Senate, 253 races in the House have been called, with 25 TBD, and 54 in the Senate with 4 TBD. Democrats could easily reach 260 or more in the House and 56 in the Senate.
- Kansas had not elected a Democratic senator since 1932.
- South Carolina has not elected a Democratic senator since 1998. Of course it’s a woman!
- Based on a poll conducted, the only group that didn’t vote as a majority for democrats was white voters; otherwise, except for age 65+, which was a 50/50 split, every other group- Black, Latino, Asian, and other races voted overwhelmingly for Democrats. The same was true for younger voters. As far as gender, even men voted for Democrats in a larger percentage than Republicans.

All this is very interesting to me, but it will not mean shit if we don’t do something with the mandate given to our legislature. Granted, this will be challenging with what I am now calling the Veto King still in power. Trump has threatened to veto everything, and to overcome a veto, the democrats will need to convince many republicans in both the House and Senate to support needed legislation (two-thirds of the full Congress, to be exact-that means 290 US House members and 67 senators). I hope we have finally broken the cult and the rats will start fleeing the ship. The democrats cannot be petty and refuse those rats a life raft if it means that we can have meaningful legislation passed to help everyday US citizens and valuable immigrants who help our country prosper. It’s time for the adults to take over.
