Voice in My Head

Most authors talk about hearing their characters’ voices in their heads. I’ve always wondered if that includes voice intonation or the unique voice patterns that everyone has? If they do, I wonder, am I deficient, because all I hear is dialogue. And it comes at the most inopportune time. Like in the middle of the frickin night, after I’ve gotten up to pee (which, by the way, is nearly every two hours now).

In the past, I’ve ignored those voices, only to lose whatever brilliance came to me. At least, I thought it brilliant, but then again, I am always half asleep when the voices are loudest. Over the past week since my competition with Ali Spooner on who can write the most words in a day, I haven’t ignored those voices. Instead, I drag my ass out of bed, no matter the time. This has proven quite successful with word count. Never in my life have I written so much in such a short time. My cats are happy because they get to sprawl out on the bed next to my wife, taking up my place in bed. Normally, I have to shove them over after getting up to pee. Meows of protest puncture the quiet of the night, undoubtedly waking my wife, until they settle all around me again, making any movement impossible.

Sometimes in my semi-conscious state, I also figure out how to plug those pesky plot holes and also receive brilliance about a new plot twist. When the stories are as complicated as I sometimes make them, I can almost feel the hand on my ass pushing me out of bed and to my computer before once again I forget the brilliance. The bottom line is that it sure is convenient I’m retired because I am definitely not getting proper sleep. I’ve always had a bit of insomnia, but this is a whole new level of chaos. Thank goodness for naps.

The one good thing about those voices in my head and the fact that I’m no longer ignoring the insistent bastards is that I will probably have the first draft finished in the next few days.
