I vacillated on what to write about today…going back and forth between podcasts and historical fiction. So in perfect Annette Mori fashion, like my romash novels, I’m combining the two and will do a quick blog on the history of podcasts. Full disclosure, don’t expect the exhaustive research that goes into historical fiction. Because let’s face it, this is a weekly blog, and I simply don’t have the time! My hat goes off to those who write historical novels. It’s hard. I did it once, and that was a combined effort with Ali Spooner, where my part was nothing more than a novella. Still, I spent more time researching that novella than probably all the research on every one of my other full-length novels, and that’s saying a lot since I love to research everything.
Before I give you my condensed version of podcast history, I wanted to note that this is not a very popular form of media in the lesfic/WLW/sapphic world. And I’m not sure why. Those who have tried it that I’m aware of include, Ravenshyre, The Therapy Cafe, Sapphire Publishing, GCLS, Lesbian Historic Motiff, Saxon Bennett & Lacy Gardner, Clare Lydon’s – Lesbians Who Write, and TLR. Only a few of those still exist. Of course, that isn’t going to stop Ali Spooner and me from launching our new monthly podcast called, Triple A (Affinity, Ali and Annette) – On the road to good storytelling. I absolutely adore working with Ali, so it should prove to be a hoot and a half each month. However, there are plenty of lesbian podcasts out there, just not ones specifically dedicated to the lesfic/WLW/Sapphic reading and writing community.
Podcasts started as something called audioblogs as far back as the 80s but didn’t really catch hold until around 2004 when tech like broadband caught up to make them something more than an irritating way to listen to someone talk about various topics. Finding the origin of lesbian-themed podcasts (any kind) was extremely difficult. I wanted to research the earliest lesbian podcast, and it was nearly impossible. I discovered one called www.2Homos.com that went back as far as November 2006. Looks like it was a fun one and something to check out. It might or might not be the earliest one recorded.
So…why did I want to combine these two topics? Well…I’m glad you asked. The maiden journey for our brand, spanking (not that kind of spanking) new podcast, is this Sunday, April 2nd, at 12:00pm PST. We wanted to avoid April 1st, so no one confused it with an April Fool joke. Although our guest is Del Robertson, and her new book, Remember Me, goes live worldwide on April 1st, and that is no joke. We’ll be discussing historical fiction with her, and I’m sure there will be a giveaway or two. Just so you know, I’ve previewed the book, and OMG, it is absolutely amazing. I challenge anyone not to love it.
