I’ve done multiple blogs about orgasms, including: the different kinds of orgasms; who has more – men or women; the secret to better orgasms; multiple orgasms; and orgasms with age, but the article I came across while scrolling the other day caught my attention. This particular article boasted about 25 things I probably didn’t know about orgasms. Because I’ve done research before on orgasms, there weren’t 25 things I didn’t know, but there were a few. One can never have enough knowledge on orgasms! Here are a few things I learned that I may not have covered in previous blogs.

- I’m not sure I’ve ever come out and said this before, but it is certainly true for me. Orgasms don’t start in the genitals. They are neurological events that begin in the brain, where it interprets sensations, builds anticipation, coordinates muscle contractions, and releases those wonderful pleasure chemicals.
- Speaking of the brain, there isn’t a single “orgasm center.” Because of this, orgasms are super complex, linking the person to reward, emotion, memory, and movement, creating orgasms that feel different all the time: emotional, intense, calming, and sometimes even overwhelming.
- Because orgasms release a mixture of chemicals, including dopamine (pleasure), oxytocin (bonding), endorphins (pain relief), and prolactin (satisfaction), they have the power to reduce stress, improve a person’s mood, and induce relaxation to the point of sleep.
- Most female orgasms include clitoral stimulation, even when the stimulation feels vaginal. The explanation for this is that the clitoris’ internal structure surrounds the vaginal canal, providing indirect clitoral stimulation.
- Faking orgasms may condition the brain to associate sex with performance versus enjoying the sensation, which leads to training your brain away from pleasure. This is why faking orgasm is not recommended.
- More so with women than men, orgasms are learned through exploration, repetition, and developing a familiarity with one’s body.
- Women can have orgasms without desire, called spontaneous or reflexive orgasms, usually caused by nerve stimulation, hormonal changes, or pressure on pelvic nerves. I remember a Law and Order SVU episode where a woman was raped, but experienced an orgasm, and Olivia Bennett was quick to assure the woman that just because she experienced an orgasm, that didn’t mean she wanted the rape to occur. That episode stuck with me.
- The physiology of the orgasm is that they are muscle contractions that are typically .8 seconds apart, and these contractions create the sensation of release. Stronger pelvic floor muscles may intensify an orgasm. However, tension, or over-clenching, can have the opposite effect and inhibit them.
- Finally, we know that orgasms vary in length and intensity. I’m sure you all have had personal experience with that, but longer isn’t necessarily better.

Sex scenes in my books vary as much as the different orgasms also penned in my books. I’ve written everything from pretty darn spicy with light BDSM to almost fade to black. The more books I write, the less I focus on the intimate scenes, but if spice is your thing and you want more explicit scenes describing the climax, I’d suggest checking out my earlier novels.
