When in Mexico, I’m a two-shower-a-day person. And…when I was in college, especially during the hot, humid summer in the Midwest, I would often take as many as three to four showers a day. I remember my mother and grandmother always chastising me for the number of showers I took in a day, insisting it was not good for my skin. They preferred the good old-fashioned cat wash or double P (pits and privates). So…imagine my interest when I came across an article about how often a person should shower. I was surprised by the dermatologists’ recommendations on this topic, having heard those messages all my life about showers. Even my wife thought I took too many showers in a day. Here’s what I learned:

- Dermatologists say that people should not go more than a couple of days without a shower, and for some, a daily shower is recommended.
- Folks who are active and sweat a lot should definitely consider a daily shower. And… if your daily regimen includes a workout, a shower afterward is recommended.
- For those who like to take showers often, use a gentle cleanser, especially on your face (with a splash of lukewarm water).
- Armpits are especially deserving of attention, including a wash perhaps more than once a day.
- Perfect shower temperatures are lukewarm, not cold or hot. Cold ones won’t do the trick, and hot water tends to strip the skin of its natural oils.
- As far as cleansers go, it is recommended to avoid exfoliative body cleansers. Those tend to affect the pH balance and strip your skin of its natural oils. A person prone to dry skin should consider a gentle moisturizer after bathing. And always blot, never scrub, after a shower to dry off.
- Showers should last between five and ten minutes, concentrating on bacteria-harboring areas such as armpits, private parts, and feet. Showers that are too long can strip natural oils, while showers that are too short may not remove buildup from excess dirt and sebum (the oily, waxy substance produced by the sebaceous glands).
- The frequency of hair-washing depends on the type of hair a person has. I have always believed I have oily hair, so I wash it daily, but many people do not. For those who don’t have particularly oily hair, it’s not recommended to wash your hair daily.

Leave it to me to take the fun out of shower sex because obviously, if you spend too long in the shower having sex, you might be affecting those natural oils! I remember joking about including shower sex scenes in books with another author, and personally, I tend to avoid writing those scenes because the mechanics can sometimes be quite tricky. However, I’m quite sure I’ve included at least one in an older book. I can’t recall which one, so you’ll just have to check all of my books out if you love shower sex scenes!
