Are there any topics out of bounds for me to write about? Apparently not. Besides, I believe these helpful little health updates that I talk about are interesting and informative. I was astounded to learn that there could be sixteen, yes, sixteen different reasons why your clit might itch. And yes, I will tell you about each and every one of them…you know, just in case. So, without further ado…here they are:

- Irritation and Eczema often resulting from scented soaps, lotions, detergents, or synthetic fibers like nylon. Lose the pantyhose, especially if they don’t have built-in underwear or you aren’t wearing underwear! If you must wear underwear, make sure it isn’t tight and it’s breathable. If you go commando, don’t wear tight clothing.
- Friction and lots of it from sex, masturbation, biking, or tight clothing. This can cause small microscopic tears or inflammation. Avoiding the activity causing the tears gives the area time to heal. Not forever, just until it heals!
- Unfortunately, sexual arousal increases blood flow that can sometimes make your clit sensitive and itchy. Fortunately, the sensation is temporary and might be exacerbated by tight clothing.
- Bacterial Vaginosis is a condition that happens when the natural bacterial balance is disrupted and results in bacterial overgrowth. This can be common with folks who are very sexually active. Unfortunately, if this is the cause, you may need to get a prescription for an antibiotic.
- Yeast Infections are probably something you’re well aware of. Most people have had one at least once in their lifetime. These occur when there is an overgrowth of Candida, a naturally occurring fungus. Ewwww. Of course, the itching is not limited to the clit, but often spreads to the vulva.
- Sexually transmitted diseases like herpes, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, pubic lice, and genital warts. None of these are any fun to deal with!
- Lichen Sclerosis is a chronic skin condition causing the thinning and inflammation of the vulva, which often affects the clit. Unfortunately for us, mature women, this often occurs in postmenopausal women.
- Genital Psoriasis is a very special type of psoriasis that affects the skin of the vulva and clit.
- Behcet’s Disease is, fortunately, a rare condition that affects blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the genital area.
- Vulvodynia is the technical term for chronic pain or discomfort around the vulva and clit without any obvious cause.
- Clitoromegaly is the technical term for an enlarged clitoris, which a person can either be born with or develop later as a result of hormonal imbalance, certain medical conditions, or the use of anabolic steroids.
- High blood sugar can impair the body’s ability to fight off infections and maintain healthy skin. Diabetics beware.
- Hormonal changes, particularly during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, can affect your vulva, vaginal pH, and skin sensitivity. This is especially true during menopause, when estrogen levels are lower.
- Medications such as antibiotics (which can trigger yeast infections), calcium channel blockers, beta blockers, and opioids can have the side effect of an itchy vulva and clit.
- Persistent Genital Arousal disorder is another rare condition that is definitely not as fun as it might sound. The arousal is persistent and not at all related to sexual desire.
- I’ve left the worst for last…Vulvar Cancer. Fortunately, this is a rare type of cancer that starts on the outer parts of the genitals, including the clitoris.

So, there you have it. I didn’t realize there were so many potential causes for itching down there. I always assumed it was due to a yeast infection…but, no, so many more ways for us to experience discomfort. Do men have to worry as much as we do…probably not. Since I’m in Mexico, I’m not going to even try to weave in a clever reason for you to check out my books. I’ll just implore you to click the links below if you’d like to continue to support me!
